2015 Spring: 四技通識選修-Reflection Paper

Guidelines for Writing a Reflection Paper

1. Paper must be typed.
2. Paper should be 1.5 to 2 page long (1.5 spaced).
3. Writing should use formal language (in English), correct spelling, and punctuation.
4. Topics reflected upon may include any information covered in class or from the reading.
5. Paper may take 1 or 2 topics and examine them in details, or more topics with less details.
Consider the followings when writing your reflection:
1. What have we studied so far that interest you?
2. What new things have you learned?
3. How has your learning influenced the preconceptions or misconceptions you brought with you into class?
4. How has your learning influenced your view of computer in language learning/teaching?
5. Will what you have learned change your language learning behavior in the future?
Reminders:
Writing a reflection helps you find what is meaningful to you and adds value to your learning. Do not simply outline or summarize the materials we have covered. I want to know what the materials mean to you. (6/23 due)

Corpus, Concordancer, and Collocation Retrival System

1. Review
2. Concordancer
A concordancer is a kind of search engine designed for language study. If you enter a word, it looks through a large body of texts, called a corpus, and lists every single example of the word.
3. What is a corpus?
A collection of texts, spoken and/or written, which has been designed and compiled based on a set of clearly defined criteria. (e.g. British National Corpus, BNC Spoken Corpus , Brown Corpus)Corpus users use a type of software called a “concordancer” to search for a specific word or phrase they want to find. The concordancer searches the whole database and then provides all the sentences containing that word or phrase. In this way, the user can see how it has been used by many different people, and can study its meaning, grammar, and so on.Corpora (that’s the plural of corpus) are now used by many people involved in language teaching. All of the modern learners’ dictionaries are based on corpora. People who study grammar and how best to teach it use corpora to discover new grammar principles NOT found in older grammar books. e.g. Cambridge International Corpus (Cambridge Online Dictionary).Different corpora
native speaker vs. learner
monolingual vs. multilingual
4. Bilingual online concordancers
Parallel corpus–A parallel corpus is a collection of texts, each of which is translated into one or more other languages than the original.
CANDLE- National E-Learning Project (計畫主持人: 清華大學劉顯親教授)
http://candle.cs.nthu.edu.tw/newcandle/Home_C.asp
TotalRecall—A bilingual concordancer http://candle.cs.nthu.edu.tw/totalrecall/totalrecall/totalrecall.aspx?funcID=1
5. What is collocation
1. In English, certain words are often used together (co-occur).
2. Collocation refers to the restrictions on how words can be used together, for example which prepositions are used with particular verbs, or which verbs and nouns are used together.
3. Knowledge of collocations is vital for the competent use of a language. A grammatically correct sentence will stand out as ‘awkward’ if collocational preferences are violated. This makes collocation an interesting area for language teaching and learning. For example:
make an appointment
make a mistake
make a dicision
but,
do an exercise
do your homework
do the research
6. Types of collocation
1. Verb + Noun
V + the survey (做問卷調查)
V + a study
V + difficulties2. Adjective + Noun
Adj + probability (很高的可能性, 機會很大)
There is __________ probability that price growth will remain.
Tthere is a __________ chance that President Bush will take a new direction on Iraq.3. Adverb + Verb
strongly + suggest4. Adverb + Adjective
totally different
very different
slightly different5. Adjective + Preposition
blamed for
happy about
happy with
7. Collocation retrieval systems (CCRS)
Tango Verb-Noun Collocation http://candle.cs.nthu.edu.tw/collocation/webform2.aspx?funcID=9

8. Group 1: Google Syntax
